Street Murals: A Catalogue of vibrant art for the public

Art in walls, colourful and vibrant is of recent inception for India, especially in places such as Delhi, having the highest number of street art followed by Mumbai, and the rest of the states following suit with pillars of support from art and design community, Bollywood stars to politicians .Street art also called Murals, the art of painting walls, is fast pacing up and getting recognition widely because they are not like those paintings which are expensive and strictly preserved in museums. They have a different effect and purpose on the lives of the people, passer-by, onlookers who sees it. And I for one loves and appreciate art, especially good ones which evokes strong messages, and it is that most of these art form shows concern, hope, values and memories of a certain incident expressing who they are, where they came from and what do they want to convey, such are the strong vibes one gets and see through street art and for people to understand and enjoy what these home grown artist have to paint on the solitary walls across India.

Street art capitals, Delhi and Mumbai are still at its nascent stage, however, these past few years these two capitals have seen interesting street painting like Graffiti and commissioned Street art sprouting around from every nook and corner contributed by local indigenous artist painting the wall with the traditional touch and also international artist painting the walls of Delhi and Mumbai coming in and participating from as far as Germany. Australia, Japan, UK and the US.

Launched in the year 2014, St+Art, a non profit organization based in Delhi is responsible for providing a platform for local and international artist. Every year this organization has been organizing street art festival, with the idea, “Art for Everyone”, as its primary goal in bringing artist under one roof and accessible to public. This festival is endorsed by the Govt, runs for a month with workshops, installations, talks and screenings. The art was of diverse range os styles from calligraphy, abstract to surrealism, realism and Indian Folk art. This is surely a great way to sensitised audiences who are new to this form of art and providing a platform for local, international and emerging artist as well. The streets of India do have plenty of Blank Canvas looking for a impactful art to evoke positive expression rather than leaving it looking drab and morose, lacking luster. This is just the beginning for the old and new age to understand the importance of street art, especially being new to India, however there is a marked improvement in the number of acceptance by people and with this positive sign, we will see more of modern street art mushrooming across Indian States.
