Sabyasachi’s Deep Plunge

Sabyasachi’s Deep Plunge by Shivani Yadav During the entire ‘Kalank’ promo tour, Alia’s style was filled with embroidered anarkalis and suits; and while it did get painfully repetitive, one element in basically all of her looks that stood out was the wide round neckline that was deep enough to be sensual but modest enough to not cross into vulgar-land.

She was obviously going with the regal thing to stay in-tune with the vibe of the film which is a period piece, but it isn’t just Alia who has shown a sudden inclination towards this style. Clients of stylists Ami Patel and Tanya Ghavri have latched onto this infant trend quite fiercely. It has the subtle attributes of Indian royalty that our country is quite touchy about. Hence, for bringing it back into the limelight, we can all look towards Sabyasachi Mukherjee who has the entire country collectively swooning over his designs for that exact old-school nostalgic attachment.

Back in August 2018, Sabyasachi released his collection ‘Kesribai Pannalal’ that featured his signature romantic version of the past. As usual, it was met with an applause but one thing that got a lot of specific attention were the deep necks. Many people were offended by an excessive show of décolletage but Sabyasachi’s defense regarding such comments has always been of showcasing the female body in the most beautiful way possible.

The style of the neckline is so simple that it’s easy to not regard it as a trend at all, but craze was still caught on by many fashion insiders and after multiple fashion shows, in the last few months thanks to some serious celebrity backing, it’s officially in trend. Designers like Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, Manish Malhotra, Tarun Tahiliani and Anamika Khanna have this feature in their latest collections and it’s interesting how basically all of them have confined themselves to just using this trend in traditional-wear. Also, none of the designers went all the way like Sabya, but instead chose to keep it modest and friendly enough to suit the buyers, which of course is an economically viable way to go even if less daring. Any trend in fashion that enhances the beauty of the female form should be applauded especially considering the industry’s history with objectifying. Having said that, the fact that the designers who have taken interest in this particularly revival are male really speaks for something. It would be nice to see more female designers on the top layer of the fashion industry, actually creating and reviving

trends for women’s fashion.
