The Quackling mind of America’s Donald Trump.
Trump’s casual abandonment of the H-1B visa program and what it means for Indians.
With “selling” the dream of ‘making America great again’, the controversial Republican front runner, Donald Trump, made yet another promise of bringing back jobs from India, China, Mexico and Japan; claiming they had been stolen. However, the real question is - Really?
The Trump idée fixe started when one of his immigration reforms included “A nation without borders is not a nation”, which is why there must be a wall erected across the southern border, and have Mexico pay for it!
Like everything else, it doesn’t come as a surprise when Donald Trump decided to make a change in the immigration system of a country that is in fact predominantly a land of immigrants. We definitely are xenophobic geniuses.
Some policy proposals for a long-term reform include an increase in the prevailing wage for H-1Bs; which means raising their current wage in order to force companies into giving these coveted entry-level jobs to the existing domestic pool of unemployed native and immigrant workers in the U.S., instead of flying in ‘cheaper’ workers from overseas.
Over the past decades, the United States of America has established the H-1B visa as a doorway to hire skilled professionals in Silicon Valley companies.
To this effect, Trump suggests not hiring people from overseas but giving the unemployed Americans more jobs. While the thought of it might be ‘noble’; it does not suffice as being pragmatic. America produces ten times more lawyers and MBA, than engineers – it badly needs to import them, and India, by virtue of its sheer size represents the bulk of it.
What doesn’t surprise us is Trump’s usual fluctuating mind and the wonders it produces. At the CNBC interview, Trump spoke enthusiastically in favor of these visas, but his campaign website still argues that more visas for highly skilled professionals would, quote, ‘decimate American workers’.
During the night of the Presidential debate, when asked about his conflicting statements on the H-1B visa program, he simply said he was “changing and softening the position because we have to have talented people in this country.”
Trump released his proposal duly criticizing the influx of foreign workers as a threat to American salaries and employment rates. Whether or not they are skilled for the job is irrelevant in this case.
In the last debate, he suddenly decided to change his formerly restrictive opinion on the H-1B visa case, now vouching for foreign workers to be brought into the country if the homegrown seem insufficient (not inadequate). About five minutes later, when informed that abruptly changing his stand on his key issue can lose him a few votes – he decided to overturn his reversal again. Now that’s a President, America is so righteously professing for!
Nonetheless, it is questionable as to why such instances do not fuel our guts or make us cringe? Is this perhaps something we were expecting out of him? Or has America developed some thick skin? Neither, or both – can’t say for sure.
Similarly, why would you be surprised at his expletive hypocrisy, when his sheer stroke to success isn’t even his own – ‘TRUMP’, his claim to fame which he has had licensed even for a steak, is not known to be his original last name (#MakeDonaldDrumpfAgain)
The amusing part is Trump’s current Slovene wife, Melanie Trump, who has formerly been a part of his modeling agency, most commonly known to the world as his campaign’s poster model – supposedly came into the United States on an H-1B visa!
Trump’s popularity is steadily becoming contagious and directly proportional with not just time, but also America’s mental stress. Unfortunately, his stance is still not clear. Keeping his mighty and constant wherewithal’s in mind, the only concern that’s hanging loose, is if he wakes up one day and says he’s BORED. What happens then?
