Young girls are obsessed with princesses and royalty. From being the damsel in distress like Snow White to being your own hero like Merida, girls really look up to these characters. I’ve never really had a fascination with princesses up until this year when ‘The Crown’ hit Netflix.

The Crown focuses on the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II but that’s not what caught my attention. The role of her snarky and rebellious sister, Princess Margaret takes away the real spotlight in The Crown. Everyone remembers Princess Diana but Princess Margaret captured the imagination and the paparazzi’s interest from the 1950’s . The Young Princess played an important role in Queen Elizabeth II’s life. She was her bridesmaid when the Queen married Prince Phillip and her true confidant when she ascended the throne. Vanessa Kirby’s portrayal of the party princess has made her the star of the series. As much as the show dramatizes certain plots, Princess Margaret’s life is depicted the exact way she led it.

Princess Margaret was the quirky naughty member of the family with a wicked sense of humour and a knack for diffusing serious situation. She would always be in the middle of disreputable accident. By the time she was eighteen years of age, the princess had already become a sex symbol. Like any other college student, she would go out for parties (royal sophisticated ones), get drunk and have her name on the tabloids along with her dutiful stances.'

Princess Margaret always lived in the shadow of her older sister. In ways she was already the progressive member of the royal family. The audience gets to witness the scandalous affair between the younger Princess and Group Captain, Peter Townsend who at that time was also a recent divorcee. As per tradition, a regal could never be affiliated with a divorcee. Ah, how times have changed. Look at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle now. Margaret’s tempestuous love life had been the focus of public heed for years. From her being the raging party royal to the miserable damsel, she always made it on the cover pages.

Vanessa Kirby talks about her character as a revolutionary role model for young girls. Princess Margaret sacrificed her love life only because of her bond with the Queenship. Season one mainly put the limelight on Queen Elizabeth II relation to The Crown and her husband, Prince Phillip. The second season is said to put partial focus on Margaret’s next affair with her ex husband, the photographer, Antony Armstrong Jones.

Princess Margaret broke all royal beliefs when she became the first member to divorce her husband. Princess Margaret is just like any other young women in our generation. She wanted to make a point. Vanessa Kirby’s play gives out her voice to the viewers. She shows how much Margaret wanted to live and let live but was taken back because of her title. Princess Margaret is indeed the tragic heroine of The Crown.
