Trend Alert! SEQUIN FASHION

Trend Alert: Sequin Fashion

Brace yourselves. You're about to start seeing sequins all over your timeline. The fashion week gave us many new and innovative styles and a lot of style goals for the year ahead. One of the trends to sweep the runaway and make a comeback in a big way was sequins. Yes, those pesky little sewn on plastic-like things that we swore to never wear when puberty hit. But this year's fashion weeks were proof that sequins aren't just for princess ball gowns or kids' party dresses. Sequins can dress up an outfit in a second, or add a touch of glamour to the most basic of outfits.

The fashion of sequins has been followed since generations. Gold sequin-like disks were found sewn onto the Egyptian royal’s garments. In 1983, when Michael Jackson performed “Billie Jean” and premiered the moonwalk one night, he wore a black sequin jacket along with his iconic rhinestone glove. We’re talking about the same dazzling embellishments that are always a red carpet winner. But now, sequins are starting to pop up in street-style looks as well. In both London and New York (Fashion Weeks), sequins have reigned supreme on the SS18 catwalks, coming in many incarnations, adorning shoes, dresses, trousers, blazers and accessories.

It all started with the very first show of New York Fashion Week, where Gigi Hadid and Binx Walton strut down the catwalk in ruffled gowns complete with lavish sequin sleeves. Victoria Beckham presented what might just be the shoe of the season; a pair of colourful sequin encrusted court pumps and a fairytale-worthy sequinned block-heeled loafer. Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors got in on the action too, covering dresses and separates in bold-colored and silver sequins, respectively. Many Marc Jacobs girls walked in turban to toe sequins.

Plenty of runway proofs that sequins might just replace your florals, come spring. It’s now entirely acceptable to dress like a human disco ball on even the most ordinary occasions. Sequins have been embodied on sarees too. Heading out to the cafe? Slip on a sweater and shimmery midi skirt. On the streets, individuals have offered up more “everyday” styling options. One layered her glittery pine maxi dress over a fire-engine red knit. Another teamed a cropped vintage jacket with high-rise mom jeans. If you've got festive events just around the corner, embrace your inner Serena Van Der Woodsen and do the sequin blazer. Think Upper East Side glam.
