Jaipur Rugs Company launches their first store of artisanal luxury rugs in Mumbai

Mumbai. 20th February, 2019

For four decades, Jaipur Rugs Company, the brainchild of Founder Nand Kishore Chaudhary, has remained one of India’s foremost names in artisanal hand-knotted rugs. Known to give traditional carpet weaving a fresh lease of life, the Jaipur-based label weaves quality craftsmanship and authenticity with innovative design. What started as two-loom business in 1978, today is an empire with a social entrepreneurship model that employs 40,000 weavers across 5 states. The brand, with its reach in 45 countries, has its presence in India, USA and China After their first store in Delhi in 2016 the new boutique in Mumbai is Jaipur Rugs Company’s second flagship store.

A minimalist’s delight, the store is sprawled across 4,000 sq ft, with a focus on raw natural materials like cement, wood and metal, in keeping with the industrial theme by Mumbai-based interior designer Ravi Vazirani. The boutique also has an experiential chamber and seating space, where customers can design their own rugs and watch a traditional weaver on the loom. The store will also have a gallery viewing of unseen rugs, either one-off exclusive pieces or heirloom pieces owned by the family, at the mezzanine level.

Speaking at the launch, Jaipur Rugs Company Founder Nand Kishore Chaudhary says, "We are thrilled to finally open in Mumbai. While Jaipur Rugs Company is privileged to have its loyal patrons from the city who regularly shop online, I feel the offline experience will bring clients, old and new, closer to us, and see the brand in a different light. Each rug has a story to tell, and our endeavor has been to bring that narrative from the weaver, to the customer, in the most honest way possible."

Adding to this, Yogesh Chaudhary, Director of the company says, “Mumbai is an important market for us and we’re happy we could finally launch the Jaipur Rugs store in the city. Our aim is to cater to our clients across the globe and we hope to launch more stores in the coming years”

With its luxurious carpets that epitomize contemporary design with unparalleled quality, the brand’s collections by Head of Design, Kavita Chaudhary, are on display, alongside the award-winning collections namely Project Error and The Unstring Collection series, and Lacuna rugs. One of the prized displays at the store is the recently launched Mysteries of Manchaha, at Maison et Objet in Paris. The series comprises of 85 hand-knotted rugs – in silk, bamboo silk, wool or a combination of these – crafted from our internationally acclaimed AO weavers’ own designs who have been presented with prestigious titles like the ‘Elle Deco International’, ‘European Product Design’ and ‘German Design’ to name a few, making them collectible artisan originals. About Jaipur Rugs:

Jaipur Rugs is the story of thousands of empowered weavers in Rajasthan, thanks to the will of social entrepreneur NK Chaudhary in 1978 Integrating original designs with the sustenance of economically backward communities, Jaipur Rugs brings the weaver's art directly to homes all around the world. Jaipur Rugs works with close to 40,000 artisans in 600 villages in India, providing families with sustainable livelihood and the opportunity to carry on the legacy of weaving carpets. Each rug passes through 180 hands to perfect the timeless art of handmade rugs. Jaipur Rugs continues to work with over 2500 women yarn spinners from Bikaner who work on a rudimentary charkha, a symbol of the Indian Independence movement, over modern age machines. Eventually, a Jaipur Rugs patron not only owns a piece of utilitarian art, but stays connected with the emotions of the weavers imbued in each knot.
